Weights come straight from lib/sportcationIndex/constants.ts. Every input is stored as "measured" or "imputed" in the Index output; cities with fewer than 4 of the 5 required metrics measured are not ranked. All 13 WC host cities clear that bar.

The Problem This Ranking Solves
Most World Cup host-city lists rank by match count or stadium capacity. That is useless for a fan who is booking a trip.
A traveler flying in for a weekend needs to know three things: Can I see more than one live event? How much will it cost? How hard is it to get between venues? Match count answers none of those. Dallas hosts 9 World Cup matches, the most of any city, and produces only 2 weekends where you can pair a World Cup game with an MLB game. New York hosts 8 matches and produces 10 stackable weekends. The city you pick matters more than the match you want.
We built this ranking to answer the question match-count lists ignore: which host city gives a sports traveler the best combination of schedule density, cost, and venue logistics?
What Score You Are Looking At
The Score column on the ranked table is the SportCation Index Spring/Summer 2026 composite, sourced from the archived Spring/Summer 2026 release snapshot (data/sportcation_index_releases/2026-spring-summer.json) at time of publication; the Index has since flipped editions, so see the live rankings for current scores. It is not a bespoke World Cup-only model. All 13 U.S. and Canadian host cities are already in the Index at measured confidence across every input metric, no supplemental extension, no missing inputs.
We use the existing Index rather than building a 39-day-window-only composite because the Index already measures the dimensions that matter for a World Cup weekend, venue proximity, rail tier, airport access, hotel and ticket medians, prime-weekend density, fan-institution depth, with year-round cross-city comparability that a WC-window composite would lack. Spring/Summer 2026 is the relevant edition (March 1 – August 31), which covers the full June 11 – July 19 tournament window.
How the Index pillars map to World Cup trip planning
The Index measures general multi-sport viability year-round. A World Cup weekend is a specific instance of that, so the mapping is straightforward rather than a remix:
- Game Density captures whether the metro has sufficient multi-league activity for stackable weekends. Cities high on this pillar (Toronto, New York, Atlanta) have teams playing often enough that the odds of a WC weekend aligning with something else are strong.
- Travel Ease captures how hard it is to move between the city's main event venues. This translates directly to "how hard is it to get from the WC stadium to the MLB park?", Toronto's 1.4-mile venue cluster vs. Boston's 30-mile Fenway-to-Gillette gap is exactly the kind of difference this pillar measures.
- Weekend Cost uses the Index's year-round ticket and hotel medians. For a WC-specific view of lodging, the ranked table shows a separate WC Hotel/Night column with Booking.com match-weekend medians, these are not inputs to the composite but are a useful overlay for WC cost planning.
- Energy Factor captures fan-institution density, bars, watch-party zones, the sports-district scene. This is the same signal a World Cup traveler cares about.
What is measured separately, alongside the Score
Two metrics on the ranked table are WC-specific and do not feed into the composite Score:
- Trips (WC + MLB stackable weekends), confirmed Friday–Sunday windows with at least one WC match and at least one MLB game in the same metro, from our overlap analysis. Sourced from the MLB Stats API and Ticketmaster's WC 2026 event feed, validated by the SportCation trip-discovery engine.
- WC Hotel/Night, Booking.com nightly median for WC match weekends specifically, generated by
scripts/compile-wc-hotel-prices.ts. Sample sizes 19–43 properties per city, within the 3 km canonical-stay-anchor radius used for the Index's year-round hotel sampling.
Both are reported transparently in the table. They answer WC-specific questions that the general-purpose Index does not directly answer.
Worked Example: How Toronto Earned the Top Spot
Toronto scores 73.2, the highest in the ranking. Pillar-by-pillar, from the Spring/Summer 2026 Index:
- Game Density: 28.7 / 40. Toronto has 7 prime multi-league weekends, 1 big weekend, and a max stack of 5 events in a single weekend, all in the top quartile (85th percentile on prime weekends, 87th on max stack). The Blue Jays, Toronto FC, Maple Leafs, and Raptors all play in the same district, which is why the city's peak stack weekend (2026-04-10) lit up with MLB + MLS + NBA + NHL events.
- Travel Ease: 25.5 / 30. Venue cluster distance is 1.4 miles, BMO Field and Rogers Centre are a 10-minute walk apart on the waterfront, and both connect to Union Station via TTC streetcar. Rail tier is
direct_rail_to_cluster. The 24th-percentile airport-minutes score (35 min from Pearson) is the only meaningful drag on this pillar. - Weekend Cost: 9.0 / 20. Median prime-weekend ticket $217, year-round hotel median $261 (converted from CAD at 0.74). Mid-pack on hotels (34th percentile), cheap-tier on tickets (56th percentile lower-is-better). WC match-weekend hotels run higher at $393/night, shown in the ranked table's Hotel column, not in the Score.
- Energy Factor: 10 / 10. Max fan-institution density. Toronto's waterfront district has the depth to support a sports-travel weekend.
Why it lands at #1: No other city combines walkable venue proximity, public transit to both stadiums, mid-range hotel costs, and top-tier game density. New York scores 72.3, higher on Game Density (more franchises, more prime weekends) but lower on Travel Ease (MetLife is a river crossing from Citi Field and Yankee Stadium). Los Angeles at 69.1 has good costs but weaker venue proximity. Toronto's balance across all four pillars is what pushes it to the top of this specific Index edition.
The WC-specific trip layer: Toronto produces 4 confirmed WC + MLB stackable weekends, mid-tier volume (New York leads at 10), but the venue proximity means every one of those trips is executable on foot. Worked Example: Why Dallas Ranks 8th Despite 9 Matches
Dallas scores 55.6, middle of the pack despite hosting the most World Cup matches. Pillar-by-pillar:
- Game Density: 23.5 / 40. 3 prime weekends, 1 big weekend, a max stack of 6 events (97th percentile, the Mavericks, Stars, and Rangers overlap heavily in April). Game density is respectable; the issue is that most of that density falls outside the WC window, not inside it.
- Travel Ease: 14.4 / 30. This is the real drag. Venue cluster distance is 11.2 miles (11th percentile, worse than every top-10 city except San Francisco), rail tier is
rail_to_downtown_then_transferrather than direct. Getting from central Dallas to Arlington requires Trinity Railway Express plus shuttle/charter bus transfers or a rideshare with documented post-match surge pricing. - Weekend Cost: 9.7 / 20. Median prime-weekend ticket $368, year-round hotel median $155. Hotels are cheap (89th percentile lower-is-better); tickets are on the pricier side (21st percentile). WC match-weekend hotels bump to $317/night, still affordable by tournament standards.
- Energy Factor: 8 / 10. Decent fan-institution density, but the Arlington entertainment district is compact and isolated from the Dallas bar-and-restaurant scene.
Why it lands at #8: The venue-transit gap is the primary drag. AT&T Stadium and Globe Life Field are a walkable pair inside Arlington, once you are there, but the metro's 11.2-mile average venue cluster distance and the lack of direct rail from Dallas proper turn every event into a car-dependent project. Add in the WC-specific reality (only 2 stackable WC + MLB weekends in a 39-day window) and Dallas is a fine city for a single World Cup match, but a weak city for a multi-sport weekend.
Known Limitations
We are explicit about what this ranking can and cannot tell you:
- The composite Score is a year-round Spring/Summer 2026 measurement, not a 39-day-window remix. Prime weekends, hotels, and tickets are annualized. We use the year-round composite because all 13 host cities are measured at full confidence there, and a WC-window composite would sacrifice cross-city comparability for a small window of data. We show the WC-specific overlay (Trips + WC Hotel/Night) alongside the Score so readers can apply both lenses.
- WC match-weekend hotel rates are reported separately. The ranked table's WC Hotel/Night column uses Booking.com medians from WC match weekends specifically (sample sizes 19–43 per city). These are not inputs to the composite Score, which uses the Index's year-round hotel median. Vancouver's WC spike ($179 year-round → $588 WC-weekend) is the clearest example of how these can diverge.
- Transit times assume normal conditions. Post-match congestion adds 15–60 minutes at high-capacity venues (MetLife, AT&T Stadium). The Index's Travel Ease pillar scores baseline transit conditions, not worst-case.
- MLS is excluded from the Trips column. Several host cities have MLS teams playing during the WC window. The Trips column restricts to WC + MLB because MLB's 162-game season produces the densest home-schedule overlap. MLS does show up in the Index's Game Density pillar as one of the leagues counted for prime weekends. An MLS-specific overlay may be added later.
- Mexican host cities are not in the SportCation Index. Guadalajara, Mexico City, and Monterrey are outside the Index's current city set. No MLB teams operate in those metros, so the WC + MLB Trips column does not apply to them either.
How to Read the Rankings
Each city receives a composite SportCation Score (0–100). Higher is better for building a multi-sport weekend. The Score does not tell you which city has the best soccer atmosphere or the most prestigious matches, it tells you where the year-round trip logistics, cost, and game density are strongest, with WC-specific trip counts and WC-weekend hotels reported alongside.
FAQ
How is this different from the regular SportCation Index?
It is the regular SportCation Index, the Spring/Summer 2026 edition specifically. This page does not compute a separate WC-only composite. What is WC-specific is the lens: we present the Index alongside two WC-specific overlays (confirmed WC + MLB trip counts, and WC match-weekend hotel rates) so a traveler can see both the year-round trip-viability picture and the World Cup-specific picture in one place.
Why only MLB overlap in the Trips column and not other sports?
MLB's 162-game season means teams play nearly every day during the June 11 – July 19 tournament window. That creates the densest possible overlap with World Cup match dates. NBA and NHL seasons end before the World Cup starts. NFL preseason does not begin until late July. MLS overlaps but has a thinner home schedule; it is counted in the Index's Game Density pillar but not broken out as a separate Trips column.
Is the Energy Factor part of the scoring?
Yes, Energy Factor is one of the four pillars (10 points), measuring fan-institution density: venues, bars, and sports-district clusters around the main venue cluster. It is a measured metric, not subjective. The pillar table above shows exactly how it is weighted.
Are Atlanta and Vancouver in the ranking?
Yes, both are in the SportCation Index with ranked: true and every metric at measured confidence. Atlanta scores 62.2 (#6); Vancouver scores 53.7 (#11). Earlier drafts of the ranked table labeled them as "not yet scored", that was incorrect and has been fixed. The ranked table page now shows all 13 U.S. and Canadian host cities.
