An overlap weekend occurs when two or more different major league home games in the same city take place between Friday afternoon and Sunday night, with enough time separation to realistically attend both.

We use structured scheduling logic, including minimum time buffers between games, to ensure suggested combinations are physically feasible.

The Sportcation Index is our 100-point data study ranking U.S. and Canadian cities for multi-sport weekend travel.

Every city is scored across five pillars:

• Seasonal Opportunity (35 points) — season-wide, multi-league weekend supply: prime weekends, big weekends, the city's single best game-stack, and three-plus-league weekends counted across the whole season
• Sports-Market Gravity (25 points) — league breadth, demand, and year-round presence
• Travel Ease (20 points) — how close together the venues are and how easy they are to reach
• Weekend Cost (10 points) — a median two-game ticket-pair estimate and a median nightly hotel rate, tracked as two separate inputs rather than one blended weekend number
• Best Venue-District Amenities (10 points) — food, drink, and nightlife near the venues

The Index is designed to provide transparency and structure, not opinion-based rankings.

The Index is published in seasonal editions (for example, Fall/Winter) and frozen for that edition's window. This ensures consistent methodology and reproducible results.

Underlying schedule and pricing datasets may update periodically, but each published Index edition remains fixed for comparability.

The published Index uses edition-frozen canonical team averages, calibrated by league and rounded under the documented methodology. A documented raise-only TicketNetwork guardrail may raise a canonical estimate when its rounded 1.2× guardrail value exceeds the canonical estimate, but it never replaces the canonical estimate with a provider price. These frozen Index inputs are distinct from live booking listings, which can change with demand and availability.

Event schedule data is sourced from official event APIs and normalized for multi-sport analysis.

Venue coordinates and transit information are curated and periodically reviewed.

To be ranked, a city needs reliable data: a measured distance between its venues and a measured venue-district amenities count, plus no more than two of its ticket price, hotel rate, and airport transit time filled in with an estimate. A city also needs measured attendance data for at least one-third of its relevant team-seasons: below one-third, it isn't ranked at all, and between one-third and two-thirds it's ranked but flagged as lower confidence. Cities that don't clear that bar are analyzed but listed separately as "Analyzed, Not Ranked" rather than force-ranked on thin data.

Rankings are based on measurable constraints such as:

• Distance between venues
• Travel time from airport
• Number of feasible overlap weekends
• Ticket and sports-weekend hotel costs

The Index does not factor in team popularity, recent performance, or subjective fan experience.

Registered users can save custom trip combinations and generate shareable links to coordinate plans with friends or family.

Saved itineraries do not reserve tickets or lock in pricing.

Hotel estimates reflect the median nightly rate found within a walkable radius of each city's primary sports venue cluster, sampled on weekends featuring multiple live sporting events. This is a sports-trip friction metric, not a generic citywide hotel average.
