Most sports travelers write off Friday as a travel day. That is the wrong assumption. SportCation cross-referenced multi-game weekend rankings against verified game start times and found 3 cities where the first Friday night game tips off at 7 PM or later on March 20, 2026. The city with the latest start is also the cheapest three-game weekend of the three.

Can I land at 5 PM on a Friday and still make it to a game that night?

Yes. SportCation's data finds 3 cities where the March 20, 2026 Friday game starts at 7 PM or later: Salt Lake City (8 PM puck drop, $345 minimum in tickets across three games), Washington (7 PM, $450), and Detroit (7:30 PM, $280 for two games). Salt Lake City is the strongest pick: the latest first-game start of the three, and a $345 ticket floor for a full NBA-plus-NHL weekend.

The counterintuitive result: spending more does not buy you more time. Washington's 3-game weekend costs $105 more than Salt Lake City's and starts a full hour earlier.

The test: one number decides whether Friday is a travel day or a game night

The rule is simple. If the first game of a multi-game weekend tips off at 7 PM local time or later on Friday, a 5 PM landing is survivable. That is roughly two hours of buffer for getting off the plane, clearing the terminal, and reaching the venue. Two hours is not generous, but it is workable.

That threshold is the whole test. Nothing about transit estimates or neighborhood proximity. Just one question: does the schedule give you two hours between wheels-down and tip-off?

Most weekends fail it, because most Friday-night openers are 7 PM or earlier. The March 20, 2026 window is notable because three cities clear the bar at the same time, with verified start times from our game data.

The three cities ranked by start time and total cost

All ticket minimums below are secondary-market floor prices, not face value.

CityFriday Start (Local)First GameWeekend Tickets (Min)Hotel/Night (Median)
Salt Lake City8:00 PM MTNHL (Utah Mammoth)$345 (3 games)$182
Detroit7:30 PM ETNBA (Detroit Pistons)$280 (2 games)$171
Washington7:00 PM ETNHL (Washington Capitals)$450 (3 games)$318

Salt Lake City leads on every dimension that matters for the late-arrival traveler. The 8 PM puck drop is 30 minutes later than Detroit and a full hour later than Washington. The $345 ticket floor covers three games: the Mammoth on Friday night, the Jazz on Saturday, and a second Mammoth game on Sunday. The median hotel night at $182 is the lowest of the three cities.

Detroit is the right call if you want to spend the least possible. The $280 ticket floor and $171 median hotel night make it the cheapest trip on this list, and a 7:30 PM tip-off is still a passing grade. The tradeoff is two games instead of three.

Washington passes the test, but barely. The 7 PM start leaves the thinnest buffer of the three cities, and the total cost is the highest: $450 in tickets plus a $318 median hotel night. Washington is worth it if you have a specific reason to be there. As a pure late-arrival sports weekend, it is the hardest case to make.

A note on what this table does not show: hotel price swings inside a weekend, Friday-night surge pricing specifically, and any difference between booking early versus last-minute. These numbers are medians, useful for comparison, not for building a precise trip budget.

The bag policy trap that can turn a passing city into a missed tip-off

Arriving straight from the airport with a carry-on or a backpack and walking into an arena is not as simple as it sounds.

Delta Center in Salt Lake City and Capital One Arena in Washington both enforce strict bag restrictions. At Delta Center, only small single-compartment bags are permitted; backpacks are not. Capital One Arena operates under a similar no-backpack policy, with a tight size limit for any bag permitted inside.

An hour of buffer disappears fast if you arrive at the gate and have to check a bag or, worse, find no bag check available at the venue. Before you book either of those cities, confirm your bag plan: ship your bag to the hotel, travel with a personal item that clears the policy, or factor in that you may need to drop your luggage somewhere before heading to the game.

Detroit's Little Caesars Arena limits bags to 4" x 6" x 1.5", smaller than most personal items travelers carry off a plane. The same calculus applies.

The buffer the schedule gives you and the buffer the bag policy takes away are two different numbers. Know both before you land.

How to run this test on any weekend in the next 90 days

Two steps.

Step 1: Find a multi-game weekend in a city you want to visit. Salt Lake City, Washington, and Detroit each have their next qualifying weekends listed on their destination pages, updated as new game times are confirmed.

Step 2: Check the Friday night start time for that city's first game. If it is 7 PM local time or later, the weekend passes the test. If it is earlier, you need to either adjust your flight or plan to skip Friday night and start fresh Saturday morning.

That is the whole framework. The schedule either works or it does not. When it works, a two-night sports trip becomes three full game days without taking Friday off work. When it does not, you know before you book.

The March 20, 2026 window is confirmed with verified start times. For weekends beyond that, rerun the check against current game listings, since start times shift when broadcast schedules are updated.

Washington is also worth bookmarking for a different reason: if you want to stack a Nationals game and a D.C. United match into the same weekend, the MLB-MLS overlap schedule for Washington in 2026 is a separate case where the schedule does the work for you on its own axis.

How SportCation identifies passing weekends

Our multi-game weekend rankings pull start times in UTC and convert to local time per venue. The 7 PM threshold was applied to Friday game starts only. A weekend qualifies if: (1) the city has two or more games across different leagues in a Friday-to-Sunday window, and (2) the first Friday game tips off at 7 PM local time or later.

Ticket minimums reflect the lowest listed secondary-market price across all games in the weekend bundle, summed. Hotel medians are calculated from sampled nightly rates near each city's venue cluster. Both figures are point-in-time and will shift as the weekend approaches.

Cities that fail the test are not ranked or listed here. The question this analysis answers is whether the schedule supports a late-Friday arrival, not which cities come closest to passing.

Don't just watch, Go.
