The counterintuitive result: spending more does not buy you more time. Washington's 3-game weekend costs $105 more than Salt Lake City's and starts a full hour earlier.

The rule is simple. If the first game of a multi-game weekend tips off at 7 PM local time or later on Friday, a 5 PM landing is survivable. That is roughly two hours of buffer for getting off the plane, clearing the terminal, and reaching the venue. Two hours is not generous, but it is workable.

That threshold is the whole test. Nothing about transit estimates or neighborhood proximity. Just one question: does the schedule give you two hours between wheels-down and tip-off?

Arriving straight from the airport with a carry-on or a backpack and walking into an arena is not as simple as it sounds.

Delta Center in Salt Lake City and Capital One Arena in Washington both enforce strict bag restrictions. At Delta Center, only small single-compartment bags are permitted; backpacks are not. Capital One Arena operates under a similar no-backpack policy, with a tight size limit for any bag permitted inside.

An hour of buffer disappears fast if you arrive at the gate and have to check a bag or, worse, find no bag check available at the venue. Before you book either of those cities, confirm your bag plan: ship your bag to the hotel, travel with a personal item that clears the policy, or factor in that you may need to drop your luggage somewhere before heading to the game.
